When done correctly, this method contributes to the 'defence in depth' approach to security by providing a crucial layer of data encryption at the network layer. - The network layer of the open systems interface (OSI) concept is where network encryption takes place. When a data packet is transferred from one node to another at the network layer, it is encrypted using one or more algorithms.
