- A **single-bit** mistake occurs when one bit of a data unit (such as a byte, character, or data unit) is altered from 1 to 0 or 0 to 1. In serial data transmission, single bit mistakes are the least likely sort of error. Consider what happens if a sender sends data at 10 megabits per second. This means that each bit is only active for 0.1 second (micro-second). To cause a single bit mistake, noise must last less than 0.1 second (microsecond), which is extremely rare.
- Two or more bits in the data unit have changed from 0 to 1 or vice versa, which is referred to as a **burst error**. It's worth noting that a burst mistake doesn't always imply that the error happens in a series of bits. From the first corrupted bit to the last corrupted bit, the burst error is measured. It's possible that some bits in the middle aren't corrupted.
