- **An encoder** is a combinational circuit that translates binary data in the form of 2N input lines into N output lines that represent the input's N bit code. It is expected that only one input line is active at a time in simple encoders.
- An encoder is an electromechanical feedback device that provides position, speed, count, or direction information. Encoders are a sort of position sensor that are part of the Variohm product line.
- Encoders are used in a variety of industries to transform motion into an electrical signal that can be read by the system control device, allowing a function or process to be performed.
