- It might strain the viewer's eyes and make the painting appear unattractive. **Overuse of the dodge and burn tools** often results in too much contrast. Only white or black is added to a colour using the dodge and burn tools.Areas of light and shadow in the actual world aren't just a brighter or darker tone of the basic colour.
- It gives a painting a muddy, **greyish appearance**
- These appear to be a shortcut for **quick and easy shading**, similar to the dodge and burn tools. To effortlessly create a smooth transition between both, simply draw a light region and a shadowed area and smudge away.
