- The **database password** is the most basic level of security, and once entered, it gives the user complete power over the database objects. A password is easily guessed and provides only rudimentary security.
- **Workgroup security** is the next level, which requires both a user name and a password. At the individual item or object type level, you can specify groups and individual users, as well as privileges.
- **Encryption is another type of security.** Access databases can be secured, and the Access 2007 ACCDB format for previous versions provides advanced encryption.
- If a database needs to be locked to prevent unauthorised modifications, it can be protected or locked, and source code can be compiled by converting the DB to an MDE file. Changes to the VBA project must be reflected in the original MDB, which must then be converted to MDE. The database ACCDB 2007 is converted to an ACCDE file.
