It was established in September 1923 as the **International** **Criminal Police Commission (ICPC),** and many of its current responsibilities were adopted throughout the 1930s. After falling under Nazi authority in 1938, the agency remained essentially dormant until the conclusion of WWII. The ICPC established a new constitution in 1956, and the term Interpol was taken from its telegraphic address, which had been in use since 1946.
