Its design allows users to interact with mobile devices intuitively, using finger gestures that mimic typical actions like pinching, swiping, and tapping. Google's Android software can also be found in televisions, vehicles, and wristwatches, each with its own user interface. Google (GOOGL ) created the Android operating system for use in all of its touchscreen devices, tablets, and mobile phones.

- Before being acquired by Google in 2005, Android, Inc., a software firm based in Silicon Valley, developed the operating system.
- While the Android source code is available in an open-source manner to aid in the advancement of open standards across mobile devices, it is nevertheless packaged with proprietary software when sold on handsets.
