**WhatsApp, a popular messaging and voice-over-IP service,** allows users to communicate text messages, voice calls, recorded voice messages, video calls, photos, documents, and location information. It is used by over one billion individuals throughout the world to stay in touch. \
**WhatsApp was the first of its kind when it launched in 2009.** There was [**Skype**](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94324/can-people-see-who-i-call-on-skype), which excelled at voice and video calling, but it was only available for PCs and arrived late on mobile phones. What Skype was to free calling, WhatsApp was to free texting.
