Some OEMs have had a problem with **proximity sensors on their products** for almost a decade. Others aren't 'as consistent,' but many, particularly low-cost models, have inaccurate and unreliable proximity sensor readings. In this scenario, as in many others, it's a good idea to update your firmware. There's a chance that a recent update fixed the issue. You can also go to **Settings > Apps > All apps** > Phone to see what's available. Uninstall updates for the Phone app once you've arrived. You can do so by **selecting Uninstall update** from the 3-dot option.
