**Speed** and **strength** are combined with teamwork and a high degree of fitness in this sport. In a single game, a single outfielder may traverse up to two miles is **Waterpolo Sport**.

**Water polo** teams consist of **13 players** in **senior** and most **junior games**. At any given moment, each side is permitted to have **seven players** in the **water**: **six outfield players and one goalie**. During a game, participants, with the exception of the goalkeeper, circulate around the pool continually. Most teams have **one central defender, one centre forward, two drivers, and two wingers** in their outfield.

Because of the significant amount of gripping and pushing that occurs during the game, **water polo** players require exceptional stamina. the game is so quick and exhausting, each side is permitted a maximum of **six substitutions (one goalkeeper and five outfield players).** \
Players can be substituted in and out of the game at any time, with the exception of the goalkeeper, who can only be replaced by a substitute goalie, and outfield players, who can only be replaced by designated **outfield** **substitutes**. \
The person that enters the game can only do so at the following times:\

- **When there are pauses in between phases of play.\**
- **Following the scoring of a goal.\**
- **During a break.**\
