**[department of Space](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Department_of_Space) is the Indian government Department** that deals with the **working of the missions and development related to Space.** It includes two main Satellites systems. **INSAT** for communication, television, and meteorology broadcasting. And the second is the **IRS,** Indian Remote Sensing Satellite used for the resource monitoring and management of the data. **It also has** developed the two-vehicle system named the **PSLV,** Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, and the second is **GSLV,** both are used to place the **INSAT** and **IRS** in their perfect orbit. \

**History of Department of Space** In 1961, **the then Prime Minister of India**, **Jawahar Lal Nehru**, gave the responsibility of Space research and the peaceful use of it and of outer space to the **Department of Atomic Energy** (DAE). Then later on the **DAE was transformed into** the ‘Indian National Committee for Space Research’ **([INCOSPAR](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94164/who-established-the-indian-national-committee-for-space-research-incospar)**), in **1962** under the **leadership of Homi J. Bhabha** and the **first chairman of that INCOSPAR** was the ‘**Vikram Sarabhai’**. After some time, in 1969 the INCOSPAR was reconstituted as the advisory body under the **Indian National Space Academy** (INSA) and then the Indian Space Research Organisation was established. **Finally, in 1972 the Indian government constituted the Space Commission and established the Department of Space in 1972.** \
**Agencies and Institutions governed by the DoS** This Department contains approx. **22 Space Institution bodies**. Some of the important agencies are listed below-.

- Indian Space Research Organisation (**ISRO**) is an important body for Space security and research.
- Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (**VSSC**) is located on Thiruvananthapuram.
- Satish Dhawan Space Center is located in Sriharikota.

- **National Remote Sensing Centre** is in Hyderabad.
