The **Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) [Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV)](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/51765/what-is-gslv-satellite-in-india)** is an expendable launch vehicle **[(ISRO)](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94085/what-is-the-full-form-of-pslv)**. From **2001 until 2021**, the **GSLV** was utilized in fourteen launches, with more planned. Despite the fact that the **[GSLV](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/51765/what-is-gslv-satellite-in-india) Mark III** has the same name, it is a completely different launch vehicle.

The **[Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV)](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/51765/what-is-gslv-satellite-in-india)** project began in **1990** with the goal of giving India a **geosynchronous satellite launch capability**.

The **S125/S139** solid rocket booster and the **liquid-fueled Vikas engine** are used in the **[GSLV](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/51765/what-is-gslv-satellite-in-india)**. They have already proven themselves in the **[Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV)](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94085/what-is-the-full-form-of-pslv)** launch vehicles. The third stage was to be powered by a **LOX/LH2** **cryogenic engine**, which India did not have or have the technical know-how to develop at the time due to the thrust required to put the satellite into a **geostationary transfer orbit (GTO)**.

The **[GSLV](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/51765/what-is-gslv-satellite-in-india)**can launch **5,000 kilograms (11,000 lb)** into an easterly **low Earth orbit (LEO)** or **2,500 kg (5,500 lb)** into an **18° geostationary transfer orbit (for the Mk II variant)**.

The **GSLV** family of rockets has made **14 launches as of August 12, 2021**, with **eight successes, four failures, and two partial failures**. All launches have taken place at the **Satish Dhawan Space Centre**, which was previously known as the **Sriharikota Range (SHAR)**.\
