Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman found himself at the centre of one of the gravest military crises in South Asia after his MiG-21 jet was downed during a dogfight between Pakistan and Indian warplanes over the ceasefire line in the disputed Kashmir region on February 27. The captured Indian pilot was released from Pakistan custody in a dramatic night-time handover at a border post on March 1. Wing Commander [Abhinandan](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/92768/who-is-garima-arora) Varthaman was captured in Pakistan after his MiG-21 Bison crashed on February 27. He is a part of Indian Air force's 51 Squadron, called Sowrd Arms and based in Srinagar. Varthaman's father is Air Marshal Simhakutty Varthaman who lives in Jalvayu Vihar near the Tambaram air force station south of Chennai. Bharat Rakshak website managed by retired defence personnel says that, he retired as the Air-Officer-Commanding of the Eastern Command in Shillong in 2012. \
