The Union Cabinet approved the proposal to increase the number of judges by 10% in the Supreme Court in the year 2019. With this, there will be 33 judges in addition to the Chief Justice in the Supreme Court. Earlier this number was 30. After approval of the cabinet, the bill will now be introduced in Parliament for this.

After the Parliament approved it, the total number of judges in the Supreme Court will reach 34. Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said that earlier in 2016, the number of judges in the High Courts across the country was increased from 906 to 1079. In 2008, the number of judges in the Supreme Court was increased from 26 to 31 in 2008.

According per the Constitution of India, judges of the Supreme Court retire at age of 65. Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde is the 47th Chief Justice of India. Previous CJI was Justice Ranjan Gogoi and who is currently the member of Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Indian Parliament.
