It is one of the five operational commands of Indian Air Force. It was formed on day 19 March, at Rani Kuthee, Calcutta.

**In the beginning, the central air command was established in Calcutta but later Calcutta was considered an inappropriate location for the Central Air Command Headquarters** and it was relocated to Allahabad in February 1966.
