**A storage device in [Computer System](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/49666/when-was-macintosh-computer-invented) that stores, and extract data files and objects regardless of power off of the [computer](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/39653/what-is-the-name-of-india-s-new-fastest-supercomputer) is known as “Hard Drive” or [“Hard Disk”](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/46845/can-i-carry-a-hard-disk-in-my-cabin-baggagehttps://answers.mindstick.com/qa/46845/can-i-carry-a-hard-disk-in-my-cabin-baggage).** Hard Drive usually has a large storage capacity and stores the data permanently until it is deleted manually. Once a [data or file](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/51181/how-to-create-a-log-error-file-in-android-studio-and-also-perform-read-write-operation-in-a-file) is saved in Hard Disk then power off of computer system also doesn’t remove the file until is done by self. **Hard Drives are Non-Volatile in nature**. There two types of Permanent Storage Device i.e. Internal Storage Device (Hard Disk) and External Storage Device.

## External Storage Device is of various types:

**a)** Blue-Ray Disk, **b)** Flash Memory (USB Flash Drives, Pen Drive), **c)** [CD (Writable (R), Re-Writable (RW), ROM) i.e. Compact Disk](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/36142/what-are-some-gadgets-to-use-in-empty-cd-rom-slot-instead-of-cd-rom), **d)** Floppy Diskette (Now, not in use), **e)** Memory Card, **f)** [DVD](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/31205/when-was-the-dvd-introduced)-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW Disk, **g)** SSD Card, **h)** Magnetic Tapes (Now, not in use) Storage Devices are one of the most important components of a Computer System. A Storage Device is also named as Storage Media or Storage Medium. The concept of Virtual Memory has been used by most of the Computer [Operating Systems](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/30731/what-are-the-types-of-operating-system-or-o-s). **It allows utilization of more primary memory capacity that the memory is physically available in the system.** \

Permanent storage in a PC refers to non-volatile memory devices that store data continuously, even when the computer is turned off. Unlike RAM, which acts as short-term memory and clears every time you shut down or restart your computer, permanent storage retains your files, [operating system](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/157582/explain-different-services-provided-by-the-operating-system), installed software, and personal data indefinitely until you manually delete or overwrite them.

## Types of Permanent Storage Devices

Over the years, primary storage technology in PCs has evolved significantly, but the underlying goal remains keeping your data safe for long-term access.

- **Solid State Drives (SSDs):** Modern PCs primarily rely on SSDs, especially NVMe and SATA drives. SSDs use flash memory chips with no moving parts, making them extremely fast, energy-efficient, and durable against physical shock.
- **[Hard Disk Drives](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/102443/how-do-external-ssds-differ-from-traditional-hard-disk-drives) (HDDs):** Traditional hard drives use magnetic platters and a moving read/write head. While significantly slower than SSDs, HDDs are still widely used for bulk data archiving due to their lower cost per gigabyte.
- **Optical Media & Flash Drives:** External options like USB flash drives, memory cards, and optical discs also fall under non-volatile storage, often used for backups or file transfers.

## Why is Permanent Storage Essential?

Without permanent storage, your PC wouldn't be able to boot up. The operating system must reside on non-volatile media so the hardware knows how to load system files during startup. Additionally, all user applications, saved games, documents, and media depend on permanent storage for retrieval across sessions.

## Permanent Storage vs. Temporary Storage

To put it simply, temporary storage ([Random Access Memory](https://www.mindstick.com/interview/23456/dom)) prioritizes speed for actively running tasks, allowing the processor to fetch active instructions almost instantly. Permanent storage prioritizes retention capacity and stability, preserving data reliably for years.
