You can force your iPhone to **restart** to rule out the chance of a software crash. Even when connected to a charger, all you see is a black screen, so you might fear the iPhone won't switch on. As a result, it's likely that your iPhone is stuck on a black screen because the software crashed, causing your device to become unresponsive and stuck on a black screen. Not only has [Apple](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/86701/story-of-foxconn-a-key-manufacturer-of-apple-products-iphones) changed the process, but it has also changed the names of some controls. On the new iPhones, the Sleep/Wake (Power) button is now referred to as the Side button. So that's the name we'll go with. \
So, here's how to force an iPhone X to restart. \

1. Quickly press and release the **Volume Up button.**
2. Then, quickly press and release the **Volume Down button.**
3. Finally, **hold down the Side button** until you see the Apple logo on the screen.

If the smartphone becomes stuck on a black screen due to software problems, you should **press the Side button for roughly 20 to 30 seconds.** If a **hard restart can fix your iPhone**, it signifies that it was turned on the entire time, but the software has crashed, leaving it with a black screen and no response. This state is nearly indistinguishable from that of an iPhone that has been switched off.
