### Answer by Hitesh Vohra

In computer network management, a **ping (Packet Internet or Inter-Network Groper)** is simple Internet software that lets a user test and verify if a certain **target IP address** exists and can accept requests. The name was created to match the word used by submariners to describe the sound of a returning sonar pulse. \
Ping is also used for **troubleshooting purposes** to check that a host machine that the user is attempting to contact is up and running. Ping may be used by any **operating system (OS**) that has networking capabilities, including most embedded network administration software. \
**For example,** Windows users may use the command prompt screen (start/run/cmd) to retrieve the dot address for any given domain name, such as 205.245.172.72, by typing ping xxxxx.yyy, where xxxxx is the second-level domain name, such as 'whatis,' and yyy is the top-level domain name, such as 'com.'
