**RAS (Distant Access Function)** is a networking service provided by the Microsoft Windows OS Family that allows remote clients to connect**. A RAS serve**r is a computer that runs Windows and has **Remote Access Service (RAS)** installed. \
Remote clients connect to the **RAS server** via a telephone line or other **wide area network (WAN) link**, and RAS then allows those clients to access network resources. Remote users have the same access to network resources as if they were logged in to a networked system. Use the administrative tool User Manager for Domains to provide a user dialin access to connect remotely to the RAS server. There are **three types** of dialin permissions you can set: \
1. **No callback**: This allows the user to connect to the network via the RAS server. 2. **Set by the caller:** After the user phones into the RAS server, the connection is terminated. The RAS server contacts the user at the phone number provided by the user. The callback is the name of this function. 3. **Preset to**: Uses callback as well, but the server always phones the user back using a phone number that the server has pre-programmed.
