[**Edwin McMasters Stanton**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_Stanton) (1814-1869) was a legal advisor and lawmaker who filled in as [Abraham Lincoln](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/35810/where-was-abraham-lincoln-assassinated)'s secretary of war during the Civil War (1861-65). A local of Ohio, Stanton quickly filled in as lawyer general under [President James](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/43472/when-it-came-to-the-issue-of-the-extension-of-slavery-what-did-president-james-k-polk-favor) Buchanan before succeeding Simon Cameron as the U.S. secretary of war in January 1862. Stanton demonstrated a persuasive power in dealing with the Union war exertion and inevitably got one of Abraham Lincoln's nearest counsels. He would keep on serving under [President Andrew](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/41661/why-was-president-andrew-johnson-not-removed-from-office-when-he-was-impeached-in-1867) Johnson from 1865 to 1868 however was sharply contradicted to Johnson's tolerant [Reconstruction](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/41820/in-what-way-was-reconstruction-successful) approaches in the South.

Johnson endeavored to supplant Stanton in 1867 and 1868, and Stanton later upheld revolutionary Republican endeavors to eliminate Johnson from office. Stanton surrendered [as secretary](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/39925/the-first-acknowledged-jewish-senator-in-the-united-states-also-served-as-secretary-of-war-of-the-confederacy-who-was-this-man) of war in May 1868. He was later selected to the U.S. High Court in December 1869 however passed on just days after the fact at 55 years old. Edwin McMasters Stanton was conceived in Steubenville, Ohio, on December 19, 1814. After his dad passed on in 1827, Stanton worked in a book shop to help uphold his bereft mother. He went to Kenyon College in 1831 however left the next year because of his family's compounding budgetary circumstance. In 1835 Stanton passed the Ohio state bar and started rehearsing as a legal advisor. After a year he got comfortable Cadiz, Ohio, and wedded Mary A. Lamson, with whom he had two kids. \
