The operating system for Apple's Macintosh computers is **Mac OS X** (with X signifying the Roman number ten). It supports a variety of development technologies, including UNIX, Java, the proprietary Cocoa and Carbon runtime environments, and a variety of open-source, Web, scripting, and database applications, in addition to many other end-user features**. Mac OS X**, which was **released in 2001,** superseded its predecessor, 'Classic' Mac OS version 9, and introduced a new nomenclature. \
tradition **Mac OS** was projected to be a major operating system progression since it was losing its competitive advantage and lacked a number of in-demand features supplied by Windows. Apple utilized **Mac OS X** to offer a variety of native apps, including Mail, Address Book, and TextEdit, in addition to substantial visual changes like the Aqua user interface and Dock.
