**Kalidasa** was a **Classical Sanskrit author** who is [widely regarded](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/100693/who-is-widely-regarded-as-the-greatest-basketball-player-ever) as the **best playwright and dramatist of ancient [India](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/23266/how-rooftop-solar-can-benefit-india-s-healthcare-industry)**. His plays and poems are based on **the Vedas, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and the Puranas.** **Three plays, two epic poems, and two shorter poems are among his surviving works**. \
[Except](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/144/union-intersection-and-except-operator-in-sql-server) for what may be inferred from his [poetry](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/story/1840/top-6-hindi-poets-in-india-with-their-best-hindi-poetry) and plays, little is known about his life. Although his compositions cannot be precisely dated, they were most certainly written before the **5th century CE**. In his book **'Mithila** and **Kalidas,'** [scholar](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/102511/how-does-google-scholar-assist-in-academic-research) **Pandit Digambar Jha** of **Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit [University](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/23164/guru-gobind-singh-indraprastha-university-ggsipu-new-delhi-affiliated-colleges)** claimed Kalidasa was a **Maithil** and a **Mithila** gem. He lived in the **Madhubani district of Bihar's Kalidas Dih.** \

**Kumarasambhava** (Kumara meaning Kartikeya, and sambhava meaning potential of an [event](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/54942/6-tips-for-organising-a-successful-corporate-event) occurring, in this case, a birth) is one of Kalidasa's mahakavyas. Thus, Kumarasambhava refers to the birth of a Kartikeya), and Raghuvamsa refers to the birth of a **Raghuvamsa** ('Dynasty of Raghu'). \
Three plays were written by Kalidasa. **Abhijnanasakuntalam ('Of Sakuntala's Recognition')** is often [recognized as](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/34352/the-term-update-database-is-not-recognized-as-the-name-of-a-cmdlet-function) a masterpiece among them. It was one of the earliest Sanskrit compositions to be translated into English, and it has been translated into a variety of [languages](https://www.mindstick.com/news/2191/the-ai-that-meta-promotes-can-translate-spoken-only-languages) since then. **Malavikagnimitram, Abhijnanasakuntalam**, and **Vikramorvasiyam** are the three Plays. \
