**Elisha Graves Otis invented the Elevator**. Otis was an [American Industrialist](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/43482/what-writers-wrote-books-that-turned-many-americans-against-slavery), founder of the **“Otis Elevator Company”** and also invented the [Safety Device](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/33377/which-activity-lifecycle-method-gets-called-whenever-the-screen-of-the-device-turns-off-an-then-turns-on) that prevents [Elevators](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/49026/which-company-is-ahead-in-elevator-innovations) from falling if the hoisting cable fails.

Elisha Graves Otis was born in **Halifax, Vermont in the [United States](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/43479/why-was-the-battle-of-midway-so-important-to-the-united-states) on August 3, 1811**. He and his two sons who were also the thinkers [designed](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/44601/the-union-commerce-and-industry-ministry-introduced-the-footwear-design-and-development-institute-fddi-bill-2017-in-the-lok-sabha-who-is-the-union-commerce-and-industry-minister) their own **“safety elevator” and tested it successfully**. Then, he took the opportunity to set up the Elevator Company on his own; initially named **“Union Elevator Works”** and later changed to **“Otis Brothers & Company”**. After a lot of struggles, he started receiving continuous orders, doubling by each year.
