The Lowland is the second novel by Indian American author Jhumpa Lahiri best known for her portrayal of lives undone and fabricated. The Lowland creates a vision as if you are also a part of it, witnessing the two brothers Udayan and Shubhash, slowly unfolding their lives in Tollygunge, where they wandered before dusk in the hyacinth stored ponds. Udayan and Subhash were inseparable once they caught the two when they were climbing back the Tolly Club wall. They had picked gulf balls when the policemen enquire Udayan took the blame on him wanting two protect Shubhash. The book is a masterpiece for me. It follows the two brothers from their early life to their separate ways; no matter one does not express much, the love remains between the two as one of them applied for Ph.D. in MIT, and the other becomes politically active. Lahiri has a way of telling gripping stories that explores the relationship within the family that leaves an imprint of gratitude of having your parents close to the next room of the same house. It isn't easy to put it in words how Subhash and Udayan had felt when their father died.
