The book chronicles Yousafzai's early years, including her father's school ownership and advocacy, the emergence and fall of the **Tehrik-i-Taliban [Pakistan](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/93112/why-is-nawaz-sarif-called-fugitive-pm-in-pakistan) in Swat Valley**, and a murder attempt on her when she was 15 years old, in response to her activism for female education. Though it has been banned in many Pakistani schools, it has gained favorable critical acclaim and has won accolades.

According to Publishers Weekly, the book sold about **2 million copies in 2017**, with **750,000 copies** in print for the children's edition. According to The Bookseller**, 328,000 copies of the book** were sold in the **UK in March 2018**, netting almost **£2.47 million**.
