A **Man of the Match**, **Player of the Match**, or **Player of the Series** award is awarded to the outstanding player in a particular **match** or **series**, usually often the one who has the most impressive. \
The word was first popularised in **[cricket](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94036/who-was-the-best-spinner-in-cricket)** before spreading to other sports. This can be a player from either team, though it is most often the winning team. \
In the **mid-1980s**, the **man-of-the-match** award in **[cricket](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94036/who-was-the-best-spinner-in-cricket)** became a regular feature in Test matches. The man of the match award is given to the player whose contribution is deemed to be the most important in the game's victory. \
However, there have been numerous occasions when a player from the losing side has received an award for his efforts. \
**Jacques Kallis** holds the record for the most awards won in Test matches, with **23 in 166 matches** played, followed by **Muttiah Muralitharan**, who has **19 awards**. With **62 man of the match** honors in **463 ODI** matches, **Sachin Tendulkar** holds the record for a **most man of the match awards**. **Sanath Jayasuriya** is **second** on the list with **48** **one-day international men of the match honors**. **Mohammad Nabi** leads the **Twenty20 Internationals** with **13** accolades, followed by **Virat Kohli** with **12 awards.** \
Prizes are occasionally shared in **[international cricket](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94036/who-was-the-best-spinner-in-cricket)**, sometimes between two players from the same team, and sometimes between players from both teams. On several occasions, the commentators and other awarding officials refused to give the award to a player from the winning side, instead of sharing it among themselves. \
Only a few times in [**Test cricket**](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94036/who-was-the-best-spinner-in-cricket) has a joint award for **man of the match** or **man of the series** been announced.
