**India** competed in the **Davis Cup for the first time in 1921** but has yet to win the competition.

India has been a **runner-up three times (1966, 1974, 1987)**. After India declined to participate in the final owing to the **South African government's** apartheid practices, the **final was canceled in 1974**, and **South Africa was awarded the Davis Cup**. With **Vijay Amritraj and Anand Amritraj at their prime, India was a strong favorite to win.**

The **All India Tennis Association** governs the India Davis Cup team, which competes in the Davis Cup tennis tournament.

The Davis Cup is an outlier. It is the world's **most prestigious men's tennis competition**. It's a prominent event that always delivers astonishing results and furious tennis. It's played in a knockout format amongst teams of players from rival countries.
