The **Uber Cup** is a significant **[international badminton championship](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/52029/which-country-is-hosting-2019-asia-badminton-championships)** played by **[women's national badminton teams](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/52029/which-country-is-hosting-2019-asia-badminton-championships).** It is also known as the **World Team Championships** for **Women**. It was **first held in 1956–1957** and was held every **three years until 1984**, when it was amalgamated with the **Thomas Cup**, the **world men's team championship**, and has been held every two years since then. The **[Badminton](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/52029/which-country-is-hosting-2019-asia-badminton-championships) World Federation decided in 2007** to divide the **Thomas and Uber Cup** finals once more, however, the plan was eventually dropped.

**Betty Uber, a former British women's [badminton](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/52029/which-country-is-hosting-2019-asia-badminton-championships) player**, proposed holding a women's event equivalent to the men's in **1950**, and the **Uber Cup** was born. She also made the draw for the first event in **1956–1957**, which was held in **Lytham St. Annes, Lancashire, England**.

The format of the cup is identical to that of the **Thomas Cup men's competition**. **China has won 15 titles** as of the **2020 competition**, making them the most successful team. **Japan ranks second with six championships**, followed by **Indonesia** and the **United States** with three apiece.

In **1956**, the year the inaugural **Uber Cup event was contested**, the trophy was officially handed at the annual general meeting. **Mappin & Webb**, a well-known **silversmith on London's Regent Street**, created it. A revolving globe on top of a plinth and a female player standing on top of a shuttlecock make up the award, which i**s 20 inches tall**.
