**Albuquerque** with a **total population** of **558,545** as of **2017** is one of the most populous cities of the **New Mexico** state in the **United States**. Albuquerque is ranked **32nd** in the **United States** in terms of population. The city of Albuquerque has also got some **nicknames**. The nicknames are **ABQ, Burque, The 505, The Duke City** and **The Q**.

Founded in **1706** as **Alburquerque** the city was incorporated in **1891** as **Albuquerque**. Named in the honour of **Francisco Fernandez de la Cueva, 10th Duke of Alburquerque (the Viceroy of New Spain from 1702 to 1711)** the city covers an area of **189.5 sq mi (490.9 sq km)**. The **government type** of the city is **Mayor-council government** with **Tim Keller** being the **Mayor**. The **National Museum of Nuclear Science & History, Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, Central New Mexico Community College, University of New Mexico, Sandia National Laboratories, Kirtland Air Force Base** are located in the city of Albuquerque. The **New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, Presbyterian Health Services, Petroglyph National Monument** and the **Albuquerque Biological Park** are also home to the city of Albuquerque. The above-mentioned monuments make the city of Albuquerque one of the important cities in the United States. The combination of private companies and government bodies, the **New Mexico Technology Corridor** is also located in Albuquerque. The **most admirable event** of Albuquerque is the **International Balloon Fiesta** which is held every year in the month of **October**. The event is the largest gathering of **hot-air balloons** in the world. The event attracts lots of tourists from around the world. Some of the other most famous sights to visit in the city of Albuquerque are the **Sandia Peak Tramway, Rio Grande Wetlands, San Felipe de Neri Church, Albuquerque Zoo** and **Cibola National Forest**. The **McCanna-Hubbell Building** built in **1915** and the **Old Albuquerque High** built in **1914** are some of the historic buildings of Albuquerque.
