After India’s **first general elections** of **1951-1952**, the **First Lok Sabha** was constituted on **17th April 1952**. The first Lok Sabha was dissolved on **4th April 1957** after it lasted its full quota of **five** years. The Lok Sabha must have **elected** and **non-elected** officers according to **Article 93** of the **Constitution of India**. Hence the **Speaker** and the **Deputy Speaker** are the elected members. The **Secretariat Staff** are the non-elected members.

The **first speaker of Lok Sabha** was **Mr Ganesh Vasudev Mavlankar** and **Mr M A Ayyangar**. Mr Mavlankar was in office from **8th May 1952 to 27th February 1956** and Mr Ayyangar was in office from **8th May 1956 to 10th May 1957**. The **first deputy speaker of Lok Sabha** was **Mr M A Ayyangar** and **Sardar Hukum Singh**. Mr Ayyangar was in office from **30th May 1952 to 7th March 1956**. Sardar Hukum Singh was in office from **20th March 1956 to 4th April 1957**. The **first Secretary-General** was **Mr M N Kaul**. Mr Kaul was in office from **17th April 1952 to 4th April 1957**. The **first Leader of the House** was **Mr Jawaharlal Nehru**. He was in office from **17th April 1952 to 4th April 1957**. The **first Leader of the Opposition** (not declared officially) was **Mr A K Gopalan**. Mr Gopalan was in office from 17th April 1952 to 4th April 1957. After the Salary and Allowances of Leaders of Opposition in **Parliament Act of 1977**, the Leader of the Opposition post got recognition.

At present the officials of the **16th Lok Sabha** are ; Speaker of the house is **Sumitra Mahajan** from **Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP)**, Deputy Speaker of the house is **M Thambidurai** from **AIADMK**, the Leader of the House is **Mr Narendra Modi (Prime Minister of India)** from Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), the **Secretary-General** of the house is **Snehlata Srivastava** and there is no Leader of the Opposition because after the 2014 general elections no opposition party received **10% membership** of the house.
