**Ministry of Education** was the former name of the **Ministry of Human Resource Development** until **25th September 1985**. **As of today**, there is **no** such portfolio named as Ministry of Education and there is **no** such minister who is termed as Minister of Education. Ministry of Human Resource Development is responsible for **human resources development** in **India**. This ministry is divided into two departments named as **Department of School Education and Literacy** (deals with primary, secondary and higher secondary education along with literacy) and **Department of Higher Education** (deals with university education) respectively. Shastri Bhawan, Dr Rajendra Prasad Road, New Delhi is the **headquarters** of the ministry. **Upendra Kushwaha, Minister of State** and **Satyapal Singh, Minister of State Education** is the **Deputy Ministers** responsible for the ministry.

**Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (11th November 1888 – 22nd February 1958)** was the **first Minister of Education**. His term of office was from **15th August 1947 to 22nd January 1958**.

At present, **Prakash Javadekar** is the **Minister of Human Resource and Development (MHRD)**. He assumed office on **5th July 2016** under **Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi**.

Prakash Javadekar was born on **30th January 1951** in **Pune, Bombay State, India** (now in **Maharashtra, India**). He belongs to the **Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP)**. He has held several portfolios under the **Government of India**. Mr Javadekar was the **Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs** from **26th May 2014 to 9th November 2014** under Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi. Simultaneously Mr Javadekar was also the **Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting** in the same time period. He was the **Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change** from **26th May 2014 to 5th July 2016** under Prime Minister Modi. Mr Javadekar represented **Maharashtra** as a **Member of Parliament** in the **Rajya Sabha** till **2014**. Post-2014 Mr Javadekar represented **Madhya Pradesh** as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. He was the **Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council** from **1990 to 2002**. Mr Javadekar had received **B.Com (honours)** degree from the **University of Pune**. He is also the **official spokesperson** of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP).
