Punjabi is an **Indo-Aryan** [language](https://www.mindstick.com/startup/28/preply-the-fast-growing-platform-transforming-language-learning) spoken by Punjabi people in Pakistan and the Punjab region of India. Punjabi is the world's **9th most commonly spoken language**. Punjabi is the most frequently spoken language in **Pakistan, India's** 11th most generally spoken language, and the third most widely spoken native language in the **[Indian](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94169/which-is-the-first-indian-communication-satellite) Subcontinent**. Punjabi is England's 3th most spoken language and Canada's 5th most used native language. It is also well-represented in the UAE, the US, France, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, and the Netherlands.

Its native speakers are around **113 million**. In Pakistan, Punjabi is spoken by 80.05 million people. Punjabi is the regional language of Pakistan's Punjab province, but it lacks a formal position at the state scale. Punjabi is an [official](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/93540/is-kidszone-different-from-official-mindstick) language of the Punjab state and is spoken by 31.1 million people in India (as of 2011). The language is spoken by a substantial [international](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94203/who-elected-the-judges-of-the-international-court-of-justice) diaspora, mostly in Canada, the U.s., and the U.k. \
Punjabi is written in the Shahmukhi script in Pakistan, whereas Gurmukhi is used in India. The usage of lexical tone in Punjabi is unique within Indo-Aryan languages (and Indo-European languages in general).
