Gulzarilal Nanda acted as the **Prime Minister of India** for the **first time** in **May 1964**. He was the **acting Prime Minister from 27th May 1964 to 9th June 1964** following the death of **first Prime Minister of India Jawahar Lal Nehru**, who died while in office. Gulzarilal Nanda was then succeeded by **Lal Bahadur Shastri**. Gulzarilal Nanda acted as the Prime Minister of India for the **second time** following the demise of the **second Prime Minister of India Lal Bahadur Shashtri**, who also died while in office. Gulzarilal Nanda was the **acting Prime Minister from 11th January 1966 to 24th January 1966**. This time he was succeeded by **Indira Gandhi** who was th**e first and to date the only female Prime Minister of India**. Gulzarilal Nanda handled the portfolio of the **Ministry of Home Affairs** from **29th August 1963 to 14th November 1966** under Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi. Gulzarilal Nanda was born in **Sialkot** in the **Punjab province of British India**. After the division of the country in **August 1947**, Sialkot became a part of **Punjab province of Pakistan**. Gulzarilal Nanda was an **economist** and was specialized in **labour issues**. Working as a research scholar on labour problems at **Allahabad University** from **1920 to 1921** he became a **Professor of Economics** at **National College** in **Mumbai (earlier known as Bombay) in 1921**. He was also part of the **Indian Non-Cooperation Movement** against the **British rule** and was also imprisoned for **Satyagraha** in **1932**. He was honoured with **“Proud Past Alumni” from “Allahabad University Alumni Association”**. Gulzarilal Nanda was awarded **Bharat Ratna**, the **highest civilian award** of **the Republic of India** in the year **1997**.
