The **third state-of-art scorpene class submarines INS Karanj** was launched by the **Indian Navy** in **Mumbai**. INS Karanj the third state-of-art scorpene class submarine was launched by **Mrs Reena Lamba, President Navy Wives Welfare Association** on **31st January 2018**. The submarine was launched amongst the recitation of **Sanskrit shlokas** from the **Atharva Veda**. Mrs Lamba named the submarine as **‘Karanj’** after the earlier **Kalvari class INS Karanj (S21)** which was decommissioned in **2003** after serving the nation for **34** years from **1969 to 2003.** Old INS Karanj (S21) served in the **1971** war.

The third state-of-art scorpene class submarine is built by the **Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDSL)**. The third submarine of the first batch of six Kalvari class submarines is designed by **French naval defence and energy group DCNS** in collaboration with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDSL). A total of six submarines are to be built in collaboration with the two groups under the **Project 75**. The Scorpene class submarines are built at an estimated cost of **$ 3.75 billion**. Before being commissioned into the Indian Navy, INS Karanj will undergo rigorous tests both in the harbour and the sea.

The second state-of-art scorpene class submarine INS Khanderi is expected to be commissioned soon. The third state-of-art scorpene class submarine **INS Karanj** also weighs **1870** tonnes and the length of this submarine is **68** meters with a test depth of **350** meters. The submarine is undergoing sea trials.
