The **first satyagraha** held in **India** was in the year **1812** in the city of **Ahmadabad, Gujarat, India**. The satyagraha held in the month of **December** by the **Manekchowk** **traders** against the **Maratha oppression**. The reason for the satyagraha was the anarchic behaviour of the tax collectors. The traders of Manekchowk also protested against the high tax rates during the Maratha rule. It was a peaceful satyagraha where traders protested by shutting down their shops. This peaceful satyagraha was so severe that the **British officials** from **Baroda** had to intervene in Ahmadabad to pacify the traders.
