# Atomic number is represented by which letter?

## Answers

### Answer by Saumya Mishra

**The atomic number is represented by the letter** **Z**. **It is the number of protons in the nucleus of an [atom](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/168003/configuring-atom-for-python)**. The atomic number is a unique identifier for each element, and it determines the chemical [properties](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/23331/nootropics-7-different-types-and-their-unique-properties) of the element.

- For example, all [hydrogen](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/39540/what-is-unique-about-the-number-of-the-neutron-in-a-normal-hydrogen-atom) atoms have an atomic number of 1, which means that they all have one proton in their nucleus. All [carbon](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/301764/the-rise-of-the-carbon-removal-industry) atoms have an [atomic](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/37701/what-is-the-ratio-of-electrostatic-force-and-gravitational-force-of-two-electrons) number of 6, which means that they all have six protons in their nucleus.
- The atomic number is also used to organize the [elements](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/1440/wpf-button-with-multiple-text-elements) in the periodic table. The elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number, from [left](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/2298/how-to-change-position-left-to-right-of-bootstrap-datepicker) to right. This means that all of the elements in a row have the same number of shells around their nucleus.
- The atomic number is a very important [concept](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/79/routing-concept-in-dot-net) in [chemistry](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/35763/which-science-is-sometimes-called-central-science), and it is used to explain a wide [range](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/2045/why-range-data-annotation-is-not-working-on-checkbox-in-client-side) of phenomena, from the chemical bonding of atoms to the properties of materials.
