The Indian Parliament is bicameral, with two houses: the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha. The Rajya Sabha has a [smaller population](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/98778/why-does-europe-have-a-smaller-population-than-africa) than the Lok Sabha and has lesser authority. [Membership](https://www.mindstick.com/interview/2228/in-which-database-is-the-information-such-as-membership-role-management-profile-and-web-parts-personalization-stored) in the Rajya Sabha, unlike participation in the Lok Sabha, is a [government](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/51970/tansen-samman-has-been-instituted-by-the-government-of-which-indian-state) institution that cannot be disbanded at any moment. However, one-third of the members leave every 2nd year, and gaps are replaced by new [elections](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/324516/the-curious-case-of-bihar-elections-in-2020) and Presidential nominees at the start of every third year. \
**To be eligible to serve in the Rajya Sabha, a candidate must meet all of the following requirements:**

- must be an Indian citizen
- thirty years old
