The first [web browser](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/23286/how-can-i-open-a-url-in-android-s-web-browser-from-my-application) was developed in 1990 and was named WorldWideWeb. It was developed by Tim Berners-Lee for the NeXT Computer. He then introduced it to his colleagues at CERN. He then recruited Nicola Pellow, a math [student](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/84686/importance-of-brahmacharya-in-student-life) intern working at CERN, to write the Line Mode Browser. The Line Mode Browser was a cross-[platform](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/83909/why-mindstick-platform-is-so-important-for-our-product-promotions) web browser that displayed web-pages on old terminals. It was released in May 1991.

In 1992, Tony Johnson released the MidasWWW browser. Based on Motif/X, MidasWWW allowed viewing of PostScript and compressed PostScript [files](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/87368/the-mitrokhin-files-the-kgb-s-hidden-hand-in-world-affairs-part-1-infiltration) on the Web. Another Famous Web browser which was developed at that time was the ViolaWWW, which was modeled after HyperCard. In the same year the Lynx browser was announced. Surprisingly, it is the only one of the early [projects](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/105927/how-to-excel-at-managing-multiple-projects) that are still being maintained and supported today. Erwise was the first browser with a graphical [user interface](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/302016/what-is-user-interface-and-what-are-its-benefits). It was developed as a student project at Helsinki [University](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/86664/prague-killings-a-university-student-killed-14-people) of [Technology](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/84551/apple-introduces-innovative-smartphone-technology) and released in April 1992. Unfortunately it was discontinued in 1994.
