**[Tulsidas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulsidas)**, also called Goswami Tulsidas, was a **Hindu saint and poet** who was recognized for his devotion to the god Rama. He composed various famous writers in **Sanskrit and Awadhi**, but he is most known for the epic **Ramcharitmanas, a vernacular Awadhi version of the Sanskrit Ramayana inspired by Rama's life**. Tulsidas lived in [Varanasi](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/44234/how-can-i-get-admission-in-iit-varanasi) and Ayodhya for most of his life. He is commemorated by the Tulsi Ghat on the River Ganges in Varanasi. In Varanasi, he built the Sankatmochan Temple devoted to Lord Hanuman, which is said to be built on the spot where he first saw the god. The Ramlila performances, a folk-theatre adaptation of the [Ramayana](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/52026/which-country-releases-a-special-stamp-on-ramayana-theme), were initiated by Tulsidas.
