**Sri Lanka** on **9th of December 2017**, formally gave over the vital southern **Port of Hambantota** to **China** on a **99-year rent**, in an arrangement named by the trade unions and oppositions as "**a sell-out**."

The Government's concede of extensive tax concessions to Chinese firms have likewise been interrogated by the Opposition.

*Two Chinese firms, **Hambantota International Port Group** (**HIPG**) and **Hambantota International Port Services** (**HIPS**) were overseen by the **China Merchants Port Holdings Company** (**CMPort**) and the **Sri Lanka Ports Authority** will claim the port and the speculation zone around it*, quoted by the authorities.
