- **Look for any faulty sections.-**To begin, scan for faulty sectors using one of two methods: Right-click on your hard disc, then pick [Properties](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/23331/nootropics-7-different-types-and-their-unique-properties), then Tools, then Check – Scan Drive. Open a cmd window with elevated privileges: Right-click on your Start [button](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/63/how-to-add-button-in-datagridview-in-csharp-dot-net) to go to your Start page. Select Open cmd with administrator permissions from the menu, then type chkdsk /F /R -> hit the Enter key.
- **Third-party applications should be used.** Overheating, the age of the HDD, [file system](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/1650/write-to-the-file-system-in-a-directory) issues, [malware](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/12717/malware-ransom-ware-and-spyware-and-its-effects), and other factors can all result in bad sectors, which are [clusters](https://www.mindstick.com/interview/1861/define-clusters) of memory that can no longer be written on. This usually means that any data stored in those sectors will be destroyed, and recovering data from them becomes progressively difficult unless you have dedicated [data recovery](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/23278/keeping-your-data-safe-tips-to-avoid-a-corrupted-hard-drive) tools on hand.
- **Make use of the Drive Manufactures Utility.**-Remove your shattered hard drive. Purchase a new hard drive as well as the necessary USB adapters. Check for faulty sectors by connecting your old hard drive to another computer.
