ChatGPT is available as a desktop app for Windows and Mac, in addition to the website and mobile apps. The core ChatGPT experience is the same, but the desktop app adds conveniences that make it faster to use during daily work.

The main benefits include:

1. Quick access with a shortcut. You can open ChatGPT instantly with a keyboard shortcut from anywhere on your computer, without switching to a browser tab. A small chat window appears, you ask your question, and you go back to work. This makes it easy to use AI many times a day.

2. Screenshots and screen context. The desktop app makes it easy to share a screenshot of what you are looking at. You can capture an error message, a chart or part of a document and ask about it immediately.

3. Working with other apps. On some systems, ChatGPT can read content from certain apps, such as code editors and terminals, with your permission, so it can help with what you are working on without copying and pasting. Supported apps and features vary by operating system and version.

4. Voice. Voice conversations work in the desktop app as well, which is handy for brainstorming while you work.

5. File uploads. Drag and drop files from your computer straight into the chat.

6. Fewer distractions. A dedicated app keeps ChatGPT separate from dozens of browser tabs.

Your conversations, projects and settings sync across the desktop app, website and mobile app, as long as you are signed in to the same account.

To install it, download the app only from OpenAI's official website or the official app stores, such as the Microsoft Store or Mac App Store. Avoid third-party download sites, which may bundle unwanted software or malware. Check the system requirements, because the app may need a reasonably recent version of Windows or macOS.

Are there downsides? The desktop app runs in the background and uses some memory, and some features may arrive on the web or mobile first. If you use ChatGPT only occasionally, the website is perfectly fine.

On privacy, review which permissions you grant, such as screen recording on Mac or access to other apps. Only enable what you actually use.

If you use ChatGPT throughout your workday, the desktop app's keyboard shortcut alone can save many small moments of switching and searching, which adds up quickly.
