# How do I delete my ChatGPT history or account?

ChatGPT saves your conversations by default so you can return to them later. If you want to remove them, you have several options, from deleting one chat to deleting your entire account.

To delete a single conversation, hover over the chat in the sidebar on the web, or long-press it on mobile, open the menu with three dots and choose delete. Confirm when asked.

To delete all conversations, go to Settings, open the general or data controls section and look for the option to delete or clear all chats. This removes your whole chat history from your account view.

To archive instead of delete, use the archive option on a chat. Archived chats disappear from your sidebar but are not deleted, and you can find them again in settings. This is useful for clearing clutter while keeping a record.

To avoid saving chats in the first place, use Temporary Chat. These conversations are not saved to your history and do not use or update memory.

To export your data before deleting, use the export option in data controls. ChatGPT emails you a file with your conversations, which is useful if you want a backup.

To delete your account entirely, go to Settings, then the account or data controls section, and choose to delete your account. Read the warnings carefully. Deleting your account removes your data according to OpenAI's policies and usually cannot be undone. Depending on current policy, you may not be able to create a new account with the same email address right away, and any active subscription should be cancelled separately first, especially if you subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Some things to know about deletion:

Deleted conversations are removed from your view immediately, but OpenAI may keep data for a period for safety, abuse monitoring or legal reasons, as described in its privacy policy.\
Deleting chats does not automatically delete saved memories. Manage memory separately in the personalisation settings.\
Shared links you created should be deleted separately through the shared links manager.

If privacy is your main concern, also check the data controls setting about whether your conversations can be used to improve models, and turn it off if you prefer.

Menu names change as the app updates, so if a label looks different, search the help centre on OpenAI's website for the latest steps.
