# Which skills should a beginner learn to start a career in AI?

## Answers

### Answer by Oliver Moore

AI careers are not only for PhD researchers. There is a growing range of roles, and the right skills depend on which kind of role you want. Here is a practical breakdown.

Core technical skills for engineering roles:

1. Python programming. Nearly all AI work uses Python. Be comfortable writing clean code, working with data and using libraries.\
2. Data handling. SQL, pandas and data cleaning. Real-world AI projects spend a lot of time on messy data.\
3. Machine learning fundamentals. How models are trained and evaluated, overfitting, metrics and common algorithms.\
4. Deep learning. Neural networks, transformers and a framework such as PyTorch.\
5. Building with LLMs. Using APIs from providers like OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, prompt design, retrieval-augmented generation, tool use, agents and evaluating outputs. This is currently one of the most in-demand skill sets.\
6. Software engineering basics. Git, APIs, cloud platforms, Docker and deploying applications. Many AI jobs are really software jobs with AI inside.

Skills for analyst and applied roles:

Data analysis and visualisation, statistics, Excel and SQL, dashboards with tools like Power BI or Tableau, and the ability to use AI tools to speed up analysis.

Skills for non-coding AI roles:

AI product management, AI training and evaluation, content and prompt design, AI governance and policy, and roles in sales, support and implementation for AI products. Here, understanding what AI can and cannot do, combined with domain knowledge, is the key.

Skills that matter in every AI role:

Problem-solving. Knowing which problems AI should and should not solve.\
Communication. Explaining AI results to non-technical people.\
Domain expertise. AI in healthcare, finance, law, agriculture or education needs people who understand those fields.\
Ethics and responsibility. Awareness of bias, privacy and safety.\
Continuous learning. The field changes every few months.

How to prove your skills: build a portfolio. Put projects on GitHub, write about them on LinkedIn or a blog, take part in Kaggle competitions and contribute to open-source projects. Employers often value one solid, deployed project more than several certificates.

If you already work in another field, the fastest route is often to become the AI expert in your current domain, such as an accountant who automates reports or a teacher who builds AI learning tools, rather than starting from zero in a new industry.
