# How can I learn AI from scratch as a complete beginner?

## Answers

### Answer by Agnieszka Wozniak

"Learning AI" can mean two quite different things: learning to use AI tools well, or learning to build AI systems. Decide which you want first, because the path is very different.

Path one: becoming a skilled AI user. This suits students, professionals, teachers, business owners and anyone who wants to work smarter.

1. Pick one assistant, such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, and use it daily for real tasks.\
2. Learn the basics of good prompting: give context, be specific, ask for a format and refine through follow-ups.\
3. Understand the limits: hallucinations, knowledge cutoffs and privacy.\
4. Explore features one by one: file uploads, image understanding, voice, web search, projects and custom instructions.\
5. Apply AI to your own field, such as lesson planning, marketing, accounting or coding.\
6. Follow free courses and guides from AI companies themselves, many of which publish beginner material.

You can become quite skilled in a few weeks of regular practice.

Path two: becoming an AI builder or engineer. This suits people aiming for technical careers.

1. Learn Python. It is the main language of AI. Start with basics, then libraries like NumPy and pandas.\
2. Learn the maths foundations at a practical level: basic statistics, probability, linear algebra and a little calculus. You do not need to be a mathematician, but these concepts make AI understandable.\
3. Learn machine learning basics: supervised learning, model training, evaluation and overfitting. Scikit-learn is a good starting library.\
4. Move to deep learning with PyTorch, understanding neural networks and transformers.\
5. Learn to build with LLMs: using APIs, prompt design, RAG, tool use, agents and evaluation.\
6. Build projects. A portfolio of real projects, such as a document question-answering app or a chatbot for a local business, matters more than certificates.

Good free resources include courses on YouTube, documentation from AI companies, Kaggle for practice datasets and competitions, Hugging Face's courses and university lectures available online. Indian platforms such as NPTEL also offer AI and machine learning courses.

Two habits speed up learning on either path. First, use AI itself as a tutor; ask it to explain concepts, quiz you and review your code. Second, learn by doing, not just watching videos. Build something small every week, and your understanding will grow much faster.
