You can do a great deal with AI without paying anything. Most major tools have generous free plans, and for everyday tasks they are often all you need. Here is a practical overview by category. Free limits change often, so treat these as starting points.

General AI assistants. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Grok all offer free versions. They can answer questions, write and edit, explain topics, help with code and analyse uploaded files and images. ChatGPT is a strong all-rounder, Claude is popular for writing and long documents, Gemini suits people who use Google apps, Copilot works well with Microsoft products and Grok is tied to X for real-time conversation.

Research. Perplexity gives answers with source links, making it a good free research tool. Google's AI overviews in search, and the AI modes in search engines, also help with quick research.

Studying and notes. Google's NotebookLM lets you upload your own notes, PDFs or videos and then ask questions, create summaries and even generate audio overviews from them. It is very useful for students.

Images and design. Several assistants can create images for free with limits. Canva offers free AI design features for posters, social media and presentations. Microsoft Designer is another option.

Writing support. Grammar and writing tools such as Grammarly offer free versions that improve spelling, grammar and clarity, and AI assistants themselves can proofread text.

Translation and languages. Google Translate and Bhashini support many Indian languages, and AI chatbots can translate with context and tone.

Coding. Free tiers of AI coding assistants and the chatbots themselves can explain code, fix bugs and write small programs.

Local, offline AI. Tools like Ollama and LM Studio let you run open-source models on your own computer for free, if your computer is powerful enough.

A few tips for using free tools well:

1. Pick one main assistant and learn it well rather than jumping between ten.\
2. Expect limits, and use a second tool when you hit them.\
3. Download apps only from official stores and websites.\
4. Be wary of "free AI" apps full of ads that ask for unusual permissions or payment details.\
5. Check important facts, since free or paid, all AI tools can make mistakes.

For most students, professionals and small businesses, two or three free tools cover nearly every need.
