## Answers

### Answer by Shakil Siddique

Yes. Most major AI assistants, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot, can understand and reply in Hindi, and many also work in Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi, Odia and other Indian languages. Quality has improved a great deal in the last few years.

You can use AI in Indian languages in several ways. You can type your question directly in Hindi, in Devanagari script, and get an answer in Hindi. You can write in Hinglish, mixing Hindi words in Roman script with English, and most assistants understand it well. You can ask for translations between English and Indian languages, or between two Indian languages. And many apps support voice input and output, so you can speak in Hindi and hear the reply.

How good is it? For Hindi, the quality is generally strong for everyday conversation, explanations, letters and messages. For languages with less online content, quality can vary more. You may notice slightly unnatural phrasing, overly formal or Sanskritised words where people would normally use simpler terms, or occasional grammar slips. Technical and legal terminology may also be translated in ways that sound odd.

Here are tips for better results:

1. Say the register you want. "Write in simple spoken Hindi, as people talk in Uttar Pradesh, not formal textbook Hindi" makes a big difference.\
2. Ask for Hinglish when appropriate. For social media or casual messages, mixed language often sounds more natural.\
3. Keep proper names and technical terms in English if that is how people actually say them, such as "bank account" or "mobile recharge."\
4. For important documents, such as official letters or legal notices, have a fluent speaker review the final text.\
5. If the AI answers in English, simply say "please answer in Hindi" or set that preference in custom instructions.

India also has organisations focused specifically on Indian languages, such as AI4Bharat and companies like Sarvam AI, along with government efforts like Bhashini for translation and speech. These are improving Indian language support across many apps.

For everyday learning, writing and communication, AI in Hindi and other Indian languages is already very usable. It opens AI to millions of people who are more comfortable in their mother tongue than in English.
