# How do I get started with an AI API as a developer?

Using an AI model through an API lets you build its abilities into your own website, app or internal tool. Instead of chatting in a browser, your code sends a request and gets a response it can use. Getting started is simpler than many developers expect.

Step one is choosing a provider. The major options include OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude), Google (Gemini), xAI (Grok) and Mistral. There are also platforms that give one API for many models, and you can host open models yourself. For learning, pick one well-documented provider and stick with it until you understand the basics.

Step two is creating an account and an API key. Sign up on the provider's developer console, add billing details if required and generate an API key. Treat the key like a password. Store it in an environment variable or a secrets manager, and never put it in front-end JavaScript, a public GitHub repo or a mobile app bundle.

Step three is making your first request. Each provider has an official SDK for popular languages such as Python and JavaScript. A basic call needs the model name, your message, and usually a maximum length for the response. The structure is similar across providers: you send a list of messages, often with a system message for instructions, and receive the model's reply as text. Start with the official quickstart guide and get the simplest example working before adding complexity.

Step four is understanding tokens and cost. You are billed per token, roughly a word fragment, for both what you send and what you receive. Bigger, smarter models cost more per token. Long conversations cost more because the full history is sent each time. Set spending limits in the dashboard while you are learning.

Step five is learning the important features. Once the basics work, explore streaming (showing text as it is generated), structured output in JSON, tool use or function calling (letting the model call your functions), image input and prompt caching to reduce costs on repeated content.

Some good practices from day one:

1. Handle errors and rate limits with retries and back-off.\
2. Log requests and responses during development to debug prompts.\
3. Validate the model's output before your code acts on it.\
4. Never trust model output blindly for actions like payments or deletions.\
5. Keep prompts in version control so you can track changes.

Build something small first, such as a summariser or an email classifier, before attempting a full product.
