# Why does the AI chatbot forget what I said earlier in the conversation?

## Answers

### Answer by Oliver Moore

You give the chatbot clear instructions at the start, and twenty messages later it seems to have forgotten them. It switches tone, ignores your format or loses track of details you already provided. This is common, and it comes down to how AI models handle conversation.

Every AI model has a context window, the maximum amount of text it can consider at one time. Each time you send a message, the whole conversation, including your instructions, earlier replies and uploaded files, is fed back into the model. Modern context windows are large, but long conversations with big documents can still fill them. When that happens, the app may trim or compress older parts of the chat so it fits, and earlier instructions can get lost.

Even before the limit is reached, attention can drift. In a very long conversation, instructions given at the start compete with everything that came after. The model tends to focus more on recent messages, so a rule mentioned once at the beginning may fade, especially if later messages pull in a different direction.

Separate chats are another source of confusion. Unless memory features or Projects are turned on, a new chat starts fresh and knows nothing about earlier ones.

Here is how to keep the AI on track:

1. Start a new chat for a new task. Shorter, focused conversations perform better.\
2. Restate key instructions when they matter. A quick "remember, keep it under 300 words and in simple English" refreshes them.\
3. Summarise and restart. Ask, "Summarise the decisions and requirements so far in a short list," then paste that into a new chat.\
4. Use standing instructions. Custom instructions in ChatGPT, Projects in Claude and Gems in Gemini apply your preferences to every message automatically.\
5. Put important rules in the same message as the request rather than relying on something said much earlier.\
6. Keep large files focused. Upload only what is needed for the current task.

If the chatbot keeps forgetting things within a short conversation, the instructions may be ambiguous or conflicting. Rewrite them clearly, with one rule per line.

Once you understand the context window, the behaviour stops feeling random. Treat each conversation like a working session with a limited whiteboard. Keep what matters visible, and wipe the board clean when you start something new.
