# Why Did the United States Wait Until 1917 to Enter World War I?

The United States stayed officially neutral for much of World War I, even as the conflict disrupted trade and put American lives at risk. By 1917, that position had changed.

How much did unrestricted submarine warfare and the Zimmermann Telegram matter compared with domestic opinion, economic ties, and President Wilson’s own policy? I’m trying to understand what made 1917 the turning point rather than just listing the events that preceded the declaration of war.
